Royal Sons of Gustav Vasa: State Reindeer Herds and a Kolkhoz-/Paris Saami System-vision (In Swedish AND English!)

REINDEER RANCHING – attracting Swedish Colonial Power for At Least 400 Years

King Charles or Karl IX had great plans for the Saamis – far beyond or within his Ice Sea-Policy/Strategy – and it contained a range of visions few of today realize.
He wanted to establish a system, in its content not so far from on one hand the Soviet kolkhoz-system, on the other the Parish Saami system that actually became reality in the 1730s, a good decade after his era.
In upcoming blog post, I want to develop myself around the huge system of ranched reindeer-herding, that Karl IX painted out.
As a pilote project, already King Johan III did  nourish and fulfill some of these plans; shipping reindeer herds and the Saami herders, who back in 1571 had followed their herds to Lake Mälaren; Färingsö Island with Svartsjö Gård and Västerås Castle.

While we speak tons of King Gustav I Vasa, King Karl IX,
and now also King Fredrik; some of the regents’ Saami policies tend to be forgotten.
Except Christina; I am increasingly interested in Johan III and what happened to the Saami people under his regency.

    • Hi. Oh, I believe I was blurry!

No, what I am intending to say, is that Johan III put the herds and the herders there.
Karl IX, later, intended to nationalize the reindeer herding; transforming it from a indigenous subsistance into a state industry.
To every Saami couple a small share of herd was planned to be portioned. That encompassed all te Saamis within the Imperial Sweden.

So the Royalties appreciated these Mälaren herds; they had brought them there, they enjoyed it.

The Saamis that were later to be deported, were the indigenous ones in Central Sweden.

      Gilla
