”Within Dalecarlia hatced and born”. On ethnic cleansing and the genesis of the parish-saami system
Series of short essays on the Southernmost Saamis history, Pt 1 This time we will take a look at the dislocation of Saamis from the Mälaren valley counties, the Bergslagen (mining area, that is), Dalecarlia and the counties we today know as Gävleborg and Västernorrland. In the 1700s (as a matter of fact the ethnic cleansing atttempts started already back in the 1640s, at least those we know of; but we will return to these times). Years of confusion followed, untill the reindeer herding forest-Saamis got to know that the decision was suspended (about 1735, if we do conclude from the moval patterns; there are sofar no known official documents on this part of the scenario). Eventually they are allowed to remain in the northern parts of Dalecarlia, above Falun (Sundborn and Svärdsjö towards Enviken parishes for most of them), but theu must not hunt neither put out pray traps. Several supplicas were sent to the King in May and July ,1730, last date the Saamis wrote that they were within Dalecarlia hatched and borned, whereas out forefathers well over 100 years have had their dwelling, and soforth within the true Lappish language we are, as well as in their habits scarce-knowingly;, therefore we shall after aforementioned publication to the Lappmark be sent, then we will, without any hesitation, be, suffering, spiritually as well as bodily be shipwrecked. Between September 1720 and the reformed publication in October 29, 1723 some Saami families in these southern areas were arrested. The plan was to transfer them to Gävle Castle prison for further transport to Jämtland or even further northwards situated Saami areas, Lappmarker. Most Saamis remained in the southern areas, and, as we have seen – in Dalecarlia, the home of theirs ancestors. And already in early 1740s the Västmanland nomadic patterns were fully active again. Handicraft and slaughter of horses – symbiosises and slave systems… More in upcoming texts. PICTURE: Knud Leem, Sea Saami hut
